i worked with bootstrap and engineers to build a portal used by security technicians during in-home security panel installs. the project required deep knowledge of back-end workflows and the tools technicians use most. over the course of eight years at securenet, i designed layouts and pages in figma and adobe xd to make the portal easy and effective for field use.
-
i started by looking at the current backend workflows to figure out where we needed to combine features that were scattered everywhere. i worked with the cto to understand what tools technicians used most and where he wanted to see improvements. my process was simple: first, i made a wireframe that the cto and vp of product approved. then i implemented most of the designs myself in bootstrap and redesigned pages in adobe xd so the engineering team had a clear understanding of what needed to change if i was unable to change it myself. i also built a feature that let companies customize their portal with their own logo and brand color.

the technicians really liked the new portal because it worked much better than before. the interface was cleaner and worked on all devices, which was important since technicians used phones and tablets in the field or desktops in the office. by making the design flexible and adding white-labeling features, we created a professional tool that different security companies could customize without losing what made it work well.

the team was small, but we worked well together. i handled the ui/ux design, and worked with one backend engineer handling the technical stuff, our vp of product touched base every now and then to make sure everything stayed on track, and the cto made sure everything made sense from a technical perspective. working with people who understood the industry made it easy to communicate, which was important since this project evolved over eight years.
